Microsoft Windows NT embedded 4.0 bootable CD-ROM stops responding after NTLDR (250490)

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Windows NT Embedded 4.0 supports starting the embedded run-time image from an El Torito (bootable) CD-ROM (CD). When you try to start up from a Windows NT Embedded startup disk (bootable CD), the startup process stops responding (hangs) at some point after the Windows NT boot loader starts and before the Windows Graphical User Interface (GUI) initializes.

CAUSE

The boot files and WINNT directory must be written to the bootable CD in a particular order.

RESOLUTION

To create a bootable CD with the Windows NT Embedded 4.0 run-time image, you must use CD creation software that supports copying the Windows NT Boot Sector, and allows you to control the order of the files on the CD.

When you create the CD, place the files on the source hard drive in the following order:
  1. Ntdetect.com, NTLDR, and Boot.ini.
  2. WINNT folder.
  3. Everything else.
You must ensure that the source hard drive contains a valid Windows NT boot sector. If you ensure that the CD creation software copies the files to the CD in the correct order, then proper booting will occur.
