ACC2000: Error When You Export an Object to a Path and File Name Longer Than 64 Characters (250459)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to export an object from Access 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot update. Database or object is read-only.
You receive this error message no matter which file format you are exporting to.

CAUSE

The length of the path (the folder location together with the file name) that you entered in the Export dialog box exceeds 64 characters.

WORKAROUND

Export the object so that the length of the path (the folder location together with the file name) does not exceed 64 characters. Once you have exported the file successfully, you can move the file to the folder that you want and rename the file to a name that you want.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4).

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Start Access 2000, and then open the sample database Northwind.mdb.
  2. In the Database window, click the Customers table.
  3. On the File menu, click Export.
  4. In the Save as type box, click Microsoft Excel 97-2000 (*.xls).
  5. In the Save in box, select the My Documents folder.
  6. In the File Name box, type a name for the file. Ensure that the file name that you type plus the path to the My Documents folder contains more than 64 characters.
  7. Click Save.

Note that you receive the error message mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
