OL2000: Third-Party Utility Programs May Not Display Error Messages (250369)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q250369

SYMPTOMS

Outlook 2000 may stop responding unexpectedly without any error messages. This may happen when you open Outlook, or when you read or send and receive messages.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when you run a third-party error handling program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, uninstall or disable any third-party error handling utility programs. After you have uninstalled or disabled the program, Outlook displays an error message that you can use to help troubleshoot the behavior.

MORE INFORMATION

The following is an example of an Outlook error message that may occur on a computer that is running a Microsoft Windows 98 operating system that does not have a third-party error handling program installed
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If you click Details, you may see the following error message:
Outlook has caused an invalid page fault in module unknown at 0137:bff9a080.
Because programs pass instructions back and forth, the program that is the direct cause of the error message is not always listed. To troubleshoot the error message, you must know what process (or processes) was happening when the error message occurred.

There are many third-party utility programs that are currently sold to aid in error handling. The third-party error handling program intercepts errors, and then generate an error log. These programs may not notify you of the actual program or files that are involved. Programs can appear to terminate or stop responding without an error messages.
