Security Alert Warning Occurs When You Open Previously Customized IE4 Folders After Upgrade to Windows Me (250128)

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows Millennium (Me) on a computer that runs Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and that has some newly created customized folders, you may receive the following security alert error message when you first open one of the customized folders:
The file or folder you are opening contains Web content that may be unsafe. The Web content has either been modified or is from an unknown source. Do you want to allow it to be initialized and be accessed by scripts?

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if customized folders that were created under Windows 98 have not been migrated to Windows Me. When Windows Me is installed, only the default customized folders are migrated. Windows Me does not support migration of any newly created customized folders.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior and display the customized folder, click Yes in the Security Alert dialog box to register the customized folder information in Windows Me.

If Windows Me does not display the custom folder correctly, run the Customize This Folder Wizard. Specify Remove customizations, and then recreate the customer folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The security alert that you receive when you first open one of your customized folders is caused by differences in how Windows Me and Windows 98 register the customized folders.

In Windows 98 the customized folder information lies in two hidden files, Desktop.ini and Folder.htt, which are located in the customized folder. In Windows Me this information lies in the hidden file Desktop.ini and a hidden subfolder named Folder Settings, which are located in the customized folder. The subfolder contains a Folder.htt file, a Comment.htt file, and any image files that are needed to display the customized folder.
