This article was previously published under Q249865 SYMPTOMS
When you create an index, it may contain extra index entries. This occurs when the index entry contains a word that begins with an umlaut letter (for example, , , ).
NOTE: This problem may occur in an English, Spanish, German, or French Word document.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because Word may sort characters differently based on your document and enabled language settings. In some cases, the umlaut vowel may be sorted as a separate word instead of part of the intended word.
WORKAROUND
Unlink the INDEX field and remove the unwanted headings manually. To unlink the field, select your index and press CTRL+SHIFT+F9. This converts the index to ordinary text and you can make the required changes.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
