WD2000: AutoText Containing Fillin Field or Ask Field Prompts Twice (249303)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q249303

SYMPTOMS

When you insert an AutoText entry that contains a FILLIN or ASK field, you are prompted with the FILLIN or ASK field when you click the AutoText entry to select it and then again when you insert the AutoText entry.

CAUSE

FILLIN and ASK fields display the prompt when they are previewed on the AutoText tab (on the Insert menu, point to AutoText and click AutoText). Any information added to this prompt is discarded, and you are prompted a second time for the data. This is a design limitation of Microsoft Word 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To temporarily work around this problem, type the name of the AutoText entry into your Word document and press F3 to insert the text into the document.

NOTE: This workaround does not allow you to preview the AutoText entry before you insert it into your document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
