SYMPTOMS

When you use the Word Count feature (on the Tools menu, click Word Count) in a Microsoft Word document, the Characters (with spaces) count may appear to be incorrect.

This problem occurs when you use any of the following in the document:
  • Tab stops
  • Line breaks
  • Section breaks

CAUSE

This functionality is by design. However, Microsoft Word Help incorrectly states the following about Word Count:

Displays the number of characters in the active document, including spaces. Character count doesn't include the following characters: tabs, line breaks, paragraph marks, page breaks, column breaks, section breaks, and hidden text.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
