Deleting Files from Recycle Bin May Take Eight to Nine Seconds in Windows 98 (249036)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
This article was previously published under Q249036 SYMPTOMS
When you delete items from the Recycle Bin in Windows 98, your mouse pointer may change to an hourglass and your computer may appear to be busy for approximately eight to nine seconds.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you have one large hard disk with multiple partitions (for example, if you have seven partitions).
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, you can change the Recycle Bin properties so that files are deleted immediately instead of being moved to the Recycle Bin. WARNING: If you make this change, deleted files are removed immediately, and cannot be recovered from the Recycle Bin.
To change the Recycle Bin properties so that files are deleted immediately:
- Right-click the Recycle Bin icon, and then click Properties.
- If you use one setting for all drives, click to select the Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted check box, and then click OK.
If you have configured the Recycle Bin to work independently on each drive, click to select the Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted check box on the tab for each local disk, and then click OK.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
