SUMMARY

In Microsoft Exchange Server 4.0 and 5.x, the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) log file names always start with "EDB" (for example, Edb.log, Edb00001.log, Edb00002.log, and so on).

In Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, you can have multiple Storage Groups on a server, with each storage group capable of supporting several information stores. Each Storage Group uses its own set of transaction log files. To distinguish between log files belonging to different Storage Groups, in Exchange 2000, log file names start with the log file prefix (for example, E00.log, E0000001.log, E01.log, E0100001.log, and so on).

When a Storage Group is created, the administrator program checks for existing sets of log files on that server and generates the next unique Exx number. This unique Exx number is called the log file prefix and can be viewed through a read-only field on the Properties page of the Storage Group.
