ACC2000: Canceling Form or Report Wizard Does Not Release Exclusive Lock (248936)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q248936 Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.
This article applies to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb) and to a Microsoft Access project (.adp).
SYMPTOMS
When you start the Form or Report Wizard in Microsoft Access 2000 to create a new form or report, and you then cancel the wizard, you may receive one of the following error messages if you try to open a second instance of the same database:
The database has been placed in a state by user UserName on machine MachineName that prevents it from being opened or locked.
Could not use path\databasename; File already in use.
The database databasename will be opened read-only because one of the following occurred: the file is locked for editing by another user, or the file (or folder in which it is located,) is marked as read-only, or you specified that you wanted to open this file read-only.
CAUSE
When the New Object dialog box or the Form or Report Wizard is cancelled, Access puts the opened database in exclusive mode. Canceling the request for a new form or new report should not create a dirty object, but it does. The exclusive lock should be released if there are no other dirty objects in the project, just as it is done when you close the last dirty form.
