OL2000: Cannot Do On-Demand Installation on Windows 2000 Advanced Server (248858)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q248858

SYMPTOMS

You are using Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Terminal Services, and you are logged on using the Remote Administration mode. You install Office 2000 without using any transform, so the Windows Installer does not detect Terminal Services. When you start Outlook for the first time, Outlook behaves like it is on a Terminal Server computer and does not allow a run-time demand installation.

CAUSE

Windows 2000 Advanced Server introduces the new Remote Administration Terminal Services mode. This mode causes problems with the Office 2000 Install-On-Demand feature. On this platform, Windows Installer does not set the "Terminal Server" property, so Office 2000 Setup proceeds as usual on non-Terminal Server computers, without requiring the Terminal Services transform normally needed in Terminal Server. At run time, however, Office checks for the Terminal Server platform and returns TRUE, thus preventing any run-time demand installations. There is nothing in the installer that prevents a run-time demand installation, only an Office run-time check.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.

MORE INFORMATION

This fix is only for demand installation, and for Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1). It does not change the graphic degradation code, such as the splash screen. With this fix, the splash screen is still text based. Nor does it change the inability to configure an Offline Store (OST) while on a Terminal Server computer.
