OL2000: Repair/Reinstallation Starts Unexpectedly (248847)

SYMPTOMS

  • You log on to a Windows 2000 computer as a user, and before running any Office program, you browse the Office directory and scroll down to view the Welcome.msg file. -or-

  • You log on to a Windows 2000 computer as an administrator, and before you run any Office program, you click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
The Office detect and repair program may start and attempt to reinstall Outlook and several MAPI files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.

MORE INFORMATION

You can cancel the repair and reinstallation with no ill effects; however, doing so requires canceling a number of dialog boxes. If you run Outlook once before browsing the Office directory, you should not experience this problem.
