Resume from Standby May Take a Long Time (248733)

SYMPTOMS

After you install the Windows Sockets version 2.0 update for Windows 95 or install Windows 98 (which includes Windows Sockets 2.0 support), your computer may take longer to resume from standby.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Windows Sockets 2.0 update provides support for programs that require Winsock version 1.1 support. This is for backward compatibility, and may require more time.

This release of Windows Sockets 2.0 for Windows 95 includes several features that improve network performance. These features include:
  • Support for TCP large windows (TCPLW) and time stamps
  • Support for selective acknowledgements
  • Support for fast retransmission and recovery
  • Support for DHCP release on shutdown
  • Support for DHCP decline
  • Support for per-adapter WINS servers

This issue occurs on integrated PCI network adapters, not PCMCIA network adapters. Also, note that resume from standby has taken longer on laptop computers with PCI network adapters. Laptops using PCMCIA network adapters do not seem to encounter this issue.
