Windows Millennium Setup Creates a Flat Folder Containing Cabinet Files (248646)

SUMMARY

When you install Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you may notice that Windows Setup creates a new folder. This folder is created by default in the following path:

Drive\Windows Folder\Options\Install

The cabinet files that are contained in this folder are used during Setup, or when you add or remove a component of Windows (for example, games, mouse devices, screen saver programs, and so on). This type of folder is commonly referred to as a flat folder.

MORE INFORMATION

The purpose of this folder and its contents is to decrease the time that it takes to perform actions such as installing Windows components, installing drivers for new hardware, and other actions for which you may need the original Windows installation media.

Windows does not need this folder after Setup is finished; the folder exists for your convenience. If the hard disk that contains your Windows folder is low on disk space, you can delete this folder to free up disk space without adversely affecting your installation of Windows Me. This adds approximately 150 megabytes of space on the installation drive.

The *.cab files are copied to the installation drive if Windows Me is installed from one of the following locations:

the CD-ROM Drive
a network share
a flat (a copy of the Win9x folder from the CD-ROM) on a drive or partition other than the installation drive/partition

If Windows Me is installed from a flat file on the same drive or partition as the installation drive or partition, the *.cab files are not copied.
