XL2000: Links to Closed Workbook Are Not Updated Properly (248216)

SYMPTOMS

When you open a workbook in Microsoft Excel 2000, some formulas unexpectedly calculate a value of zero.

CAUSE

  • When you opened the workbook, you clicked No when you were asked to update the links.

    -and-

  • The workbook that you are linking to is not open.

    -and-

  • The formulas that do not calculate correctly refer to a defined name in another workbook.

    -and-

  • The defined name contains a relative cell reference. For example, the defined name refers to =Sheet1!A$1.

    -and-

  • The following conditions exist in the workbook that contains the defined name:

    • The Iteration option on the Calculation tab of the Options dialog box is enabled.
    • The workbook contains a circular reference.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).
