WD2000: Words Added to Exclude Dictionary Are Not Questioned (247820)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word 2000, when used with:
- the operating system: Microsoft Windows NT
This article was previously published under Q247820 SYMPTOMS
When you check the spelling of your document, Word does not question the spelling of the words you added to your exclude dictionary. NOTE: An exclude dictionary is a custom dictionary with words that the main dictionary recognizes as being spelled correctly, but that you want Microsoft Word to question when you check the spelling of your document. For example, if you prefer "theatre" to "theater," add "theater" to the exclude dictionary. For additional information about creating an exclude dictionary, click the article number below

CAUSE
Microsoft Word 2000 Help refers to the wrong folder for saving your exclude dictionary in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. The Help file incorrectly states the following for saving your exclude dictionary file:
In Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, save your exclude dictionary in the C:\Windows_folder\Profiles\User_name folder.
To locate the incorrect information in Word Help, follow these steps:
- On the Help menu, click Microsoft Word Help.
- In the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, type exclude dictionary and click Search.
- Click Customize spelling and grammar checking.
- Click Specify a preferred spelling for a word.
RESOLUTION
To correct this problem if you are using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, move your exclude dictionary to the following folder:
C:\<Windows_folder>\Profiles\<User name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof
where < Windows_folder> is the name of your Windows NT folder (for example: \Winnt) and < User name> is your user name on the Windows NT 4.0 system.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
