APM Computer with Battery May Stop Responding During Shutdown in Windows 98 Second Edition (246817)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

This article was previously published under Q246817

SYMPTOMS

A computer running Windows 98 Second Edition may stop responding (hang) during shutdown if all of the following conditions are true:
  • The computer uses the Advanced Power Management (APM) power-management interface (as opposed to Advanced Configuration and Power Interface [ACPI]).
  • The computer has at least one battery installed.
  • You are running the Japanese version of Windows 98 Second Edition.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs with computers that use the APM power-management interface. A deferred procedure call (DPC) routine in Battc.sys is called every 20 seconds to obtain battery status. This procedure invokes a worker thread, which eventually issues an Interrupt 15h call. If the worker thread is invoked while the computer is shutting down, a deadlock may occur and the computer hangs.
