SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start one of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive the following error message:
A Required .dll file, Msjet40.dll was not found.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions are true:
  • The Msjet40.dll file is damaged or missing.
  • Mdac is not installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Rename the Msjet40.dll File

To rename the Msjet40.dll file:
  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named field, type msjet40.dll.
  3. In the Look in box, click drive where drive is the drive letter of your hard disk.
  4. Click Find Now.
  5. In the list of found files, right-click the Msjet40.dll file.
  6. Click Rename, and then type msjet40.dll.old.
  7. Press ENTER.
  8. Close the Find: Files Named Msjet40.dll dialog box.

Install Mdac

To install Mdac, use the appropriate method for your program.

Microsoft Home Publishing 2000

  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open the Close Program dialog box.
  2. Quit all programs except Explorer and Systray (which are components of Microsoft Windows). To quit a program, click the program, and then click End Task.
  3. Repeat steps one and two until you have quit all unnecessary programs that are running on your computer.
  4. Insert the Setup and Art Disc 1 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Setup from starting automatically.
  5. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  6. Right-click the HPWSTP (CD-ROM drive) icon, and then click Open.
  7. Double-click the MHP folder.
  8. Double-click the Redist folder.
  9. Double-click the Mdac folder.
  10. Double-click Mdac_typ.exe.

Microsoft Greetings 2000

  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open the Close Program dialog box.
  2. Quit all programs except Explorer and Systray (which are components of Microsoft Windows). To quit a program, click the program, and then click End Task.
  3. Repeat steps one and two until you have quit all unnecessary programs that are running on your computer.
  4. Insert the Greetings 2000 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Setup from starting automatically.
  5. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  6. Right-click the GR2 (CD-ROM drive) icon, and then click Open.
  7. Double-click the MHP folder.
  8. Double-click the Redist folder.
  9. Double-click the Mdac folder.
  10. Double-click Mdac_typ.exe.

Microsoft Home Publishing Express 2000

  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open the Close Program dialog box.
  2. Quit all programs except Explorer and Systray (which are components of Microsoft Windows). To quit a program, click the program, and then click End Task.

  7. Double-click the MHP folder.

  10. Double-click Mdac_typ.exe.
