The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0

This article was previously published under Q246624

SYMPTOMS

When administering components in the Windows NT 4.0 Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) Snap-in, you might want to add a Windows 2000 computer to the "Computers" list. However, when attempting to open the "Packages Installed" folder, you might see the following error:
Catalog Error:
The catalog version on the selected computer is incompatible with this application. The catalog is either newer or older than this application and a common version for communication does not exist.

CAUSE

The MTS 2.0 Snap-in was not designed to administer COM+ applications on Windows 2000 computers.

RESOLUTION

If you need to remotely administer the server, you can either use a remote administration tool such as system management software (SMS), connect to the Windows 2000 computer using Terminal Services, or develop active server pages (ASP) pages that use the MTS Administration objects to perform the tasks you need. The Windows 2000 COM+ Component Services Snap-in does not work under Windows NT 4.0.

NOTE: To administer the Windows 2000 computer using Terminal Services you must configure it for "Terminal Server Remote Administration".

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
