This article was previously published under Q245937

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you use resource leveling, you may receive the following error message, displaying the incorrect time for an unresolved overallocation
Microsoft Project cannot resolve the overallocation of resource name on Date/Time. resource name
  • To continue leveling other overallocated resources, click Skip.
  • To continue leveling and skip overallocations that cannot be resolved, click Skip All.
  • To stop the current leveling operation, click Stop. To remove the effects of leveling, in the Resource Leveling dialog box, click Clear Leveling.
where resource name is the name of the overallocated resource, and Date/Time is the date and time when the overallocation period begins.

NOTE: Depending on the nature of the overallocation, the exact error message that you see may be a variation of the above message.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:
  1. The currently selected Microsoft Project date format includes the time.
  2. You use resource leveling to level resources, and in the Resource Leveling dialog box, you choose the option to look for overallocations on a Day by Day, Week by Week, or Month by Month basis.
When using Day by Day, Week by Week, or Month by Month as the basis option, the default time in the error message is 12:00 A.M., rather than the actual time at which the overallocation period begins.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

Change the Look for overallocations on a ____ basis setting to Minute by Minute or Hour by Hour. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Resource Leveling.
  2. In the Look for overallocations on a ___ basis list, click either Minute by Minute or Hour by Hour.
  3. Click Level Now.
The correct time is now displayed in the error message.

Method 2

Change the Microsoft Project date format to one that does not include the time. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. In the Date format list, click a format that does not include the time, and then click OK.
Note that Microsoft Project also uses the date format that you select to display dates in other views and dialog boxes. After leveling, if you want to change back to a date format that includes the time, repeat the steps in method 2, but in step 3, select a format that includes the time.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
