  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q245899

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you open a project that uses a map to import resource data, you receive the following error message:
An import error occurred.

Check row 1 column 13.

The calendar name does not exist. Click a calendar in the list, and then press ENTER.

To continue importing with additional error messages, click Yes.
To continue importing with no error messages, click No.
To stop the import operation, click Cancel.
If you choose to continue importing, resources are imported, but they use the Standard calendar instead of a customized calendar.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You open a project that is in any of the following formats:

    • Access Database (*.mdb)
    • Excel Workbooks (*.xls)
    • Text (Tab delimited) (*.txt)
    • CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv)

    -and-

  • A resource in the project uses a base calendar other than the Standard calendar.

    -and-

  • When you open the project, it uses a map to import data.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use any of the following methods, as appropriate for your situation.

Method 1

Use this method if the global template contains the base calendar that you want the resource to use, such as the Night Shift calendar, the 24 Hours calendar, or any custom base calendar that you have copied to the global template.

Copy the base calendar from the global template into a blank project, and then merge the base calendar values into this project. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click New. (If you are prompted, click Blank Project, and then click OK.) Click OK.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Organizer.
  3. Click the Calendars tab.
  4. Under GLOBAL.MPT, click the calendar that you want the resource to use.
  5. Click Copy.
  6. Click Close.
  7. Open the file to be imported, but when you are prompted to select a map, select the map that produced the error message, and then click Edit.

NOTE: Open the project by using the Open command, rather than by using the list of recent files on the File menu.
  8. In the Define Import/Export Map dialog box, click the Resource Mapping tab.
  9. Under Method for incorporating imported data, click Merge (by key) into current project.
  10. Click the Name row of the map.
  11. Click Set Merge Key.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Click Open.

Method 2

Use this method if the global template does not contain the base calendar that you want the resource to use.

Re-create the resource's base calendar before you import the project. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click New. (If you are prompted, click Blank Project, and then click OK.) Click OK.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Change Working Time.
  3. In the Change Working Time dialog box, click New.
  4. In the Name box, type a name for the new calendar that exactly matches the calendar name in the file to be imported. Click OK.
  5. In the Change Working Time dialog box, make any necessary modifications to the working time in the new calendar, and then click OK.
  6. Open the file to be imported, but when you are prompted to select a map, select the map that produced the error message, and then click Edit.

NOTE: Open the project by using the Open command rather than by using the list of recent files on the File menu.
  7. In the Define Import/Export Map dialog box, click the Resource Mapping tab.
  8. Under Method for incorporating imported data, click Merge (by key) into current project.
  9. Click the Name row of the map.
  10. Click Set Merge Key.
  11. Click OK.
  12. Click Open.

Method 3

Re-create the resource's base calendar after you import the external data, or alternately, allow the resource to use the Standard calendar.
