PRJ2000: Assignment Units Changed When You Replace a Resource (245858)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q245858 SYMPTOMS
When you use the Replace Resource dialog box to replace a resource and specify a Units value, Microsoft Project may replace the Units value with a different value than you typed.
When you replace a resource on an in-progress task, the replacement resource is assigned at the same Units as the resource being replaced, regardless of the Units you type in the Replace Resource dialog box.
NOTE: This can cause a work resource to be overallocated if the replacement resource's Maximum Units is less than the value assigned to the resource being replaced.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:
- You have a task that meets the following conditions:
- At least one resource is assigned.
-and-
- %Complete is greater than zero.
- You replace the resource assigned to the task and the following conditions are true:
- You replace the resource by clicking Replace in the Resource Assignment dialog box.
-and-
- In the Replace Resource dialog box, you specify a Units value that is different than the original resource's Units.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, after you replace the resource, follow these steps:
- On the View menu, click Task Usage.
- Select the resource assignment for the resource that you assigned to the incomplete portion of the task (the replacement resource).
- On the Project menu, click Assignment Information.
- On the General tab, change the Work and Units boxes to values that reflect the values that you want the resource to work.
For example, suppose the replacement resource is assigned 8h Work with Units of 100 percent. If you want the replacement resource to be assigned at 50 percent instead of 100 percent, and you also want to reduce the 8h Work by 50 percent, then change the Units box to 50%, and change the Work box to 4h. If you want the replacement resource to be assigned at 50 percent instead of 100 percent, but you want the resource to complete the remaining 8h Work, then change the Units box to 50%, but do not change the Work box. - Click OK.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
