The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q245852 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when you click a hyperlink, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot open the specified file.
CAUSE
This error message occurs when a hyperlink points to a project or file that does not exist. Three possible causes for this are: - Cause 1: The file that the hyperlink points to was moved to a different location.
- Cause 2: You copy one or more cells from a project that you saved in a Web folder, and you paste that selection as a hyperlink.
When you do this, the hyperlink address points to a temporary file in your Windows temporary folder instead of the correct file.
- Cause 3: You typed an incorrect location in the Type the file or Web page name box of the Insert Hyperlink dialog box.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, edit the hyperlink so that it points to the correct location. To do this, follow these steps:
- Select the task that has the hyperlink that produces the error.
- On the Insert menu, click Hyperlink.
- In the Type the file or Web page name box, type the correct location of the file that you want the hyperlink to open.
- Click OK.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
