The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 2000

This article was previously published under Q245456

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert or link a Tagged Image Format File (TIFF) that was created in Adobe PhotoShop, you may receive the following error message:
Publisher cannot convert this picture.
This is either because Publisher doesn't recognize the format of the picture you want to add or there was an error loading a graphic converter. Publisher has graphics converters that enable it to recognize most picture formats. Some of these converters may be missing. To install converters for word processors and graphics, please run Setup again. For information on running Setup, press F1 now.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you save the TIFF in Adobe PhotoShop using a color model, such as Lab Color TIFF, that Publisher 2000 does not support.

Publisher 2000 only supports the following color models:
  • Bitmap
  • Grayscale
  • RGB (8- and 16-bit)
  • CMYK (8- and 16-bit)
  • Multichannel (in EPS format only)

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue:
  1. In Adobe PhotoShop, open and then save the TIFF using a color model that is both supported by Publisher 2000 and appropriate for the output you want from Publisher 2000.
  2. In Publisher 2000, use the appropriate method to either insert the new TIFF or link to it.

    Insert the New TIFF

    1. Click on the inserted TIFF.
    2. On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click From File.
    3. In the Look in box, browse to where the new TIFF is located.
    4. Click to select the TIFF, and then click Insert.

    Link to the New TIFF

    1. Click on the inserted TIFF.
    2. On the Tools menu, point to Commercial Printing Tools, and then click Graphics Manager.
    3. Click Create Link.
    4. Under How do you want to create the link?, click Browse to locate the original file and link to it.
    5. Click OK.
    6. In the Look in box, browse to the location of the new TIFF.
    7. Click to select the new TIFF, and then click Link to File.
