  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q245405

SYMPTOMS

When you insert text into a Microsoft Word 97 document from a Microsoft Excel 97 workbook, you find that:
  • Any underline formatting appears raised above the baseline, giving the text the appearance of having strikethrough formatting.

This behavior is noticeable on screen and in print preview, but it does not affect how the document is printed.

    -or-
  • Any text with underline formatting appears on screen without the underline at all. However, in print preview, the text appears to have strikethrough formatting.

This behavior does not affect how the document is printed.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if all of the following are true:
  1. You are using the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 operating system.
  2. You have a Printer Control Language (PCL) printer driver installed as the default printer.
  3. You click Paste Special on the Edit menu and select Microsoft Excel Worksheet Object.
Also, if you have increased your zoom settings in Word, this may cause the underline formatting to not appear on the screen.

The behavior does not occur if you are using a PostScript printer driver, nor is the printed document affected.

This is a display issue only. When Word creates the metafile image of the document object, it displays the object by using a screen font rather than a printer font. Because the screen font does not match the printer font, the baseline of the character falls below the position for the underline. As a result, the underline formatting runs through the bottom of the characters.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, increase your zoom settings. To do this in Microsoft Word, follow these steps:
  1. On the View menu, click Zoom.
  2. In the Zoom dialog box, click to select a different setting under Zoom to.
  3. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
