SYMPTOMS

After you uninstall Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 5.01 or Outlook Express 5.5 from a computer running Windows 98 Second Edition, Outlook Express is no longer installed on the computer.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because you cannot uninstall from Outlook Express 5.01 or Outlook Express 5.5 to Outlook Express 5. You can only uninstall from Outlook Express 5.01 or Outlook Express 5.5 to Microsoft Outlook Express 4.x.

Because Windows 98 Second Edition includes Outlook Express 5, uninstalling from Windows 98 Second Edition removes the program altogether.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use the appropriate method.

Option 1

Reinstall Outlook Express 5 that was included with Windows 98 Second Edition, using the following steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. On the Windows Setup tab, click to select the Outlook Express check box, and then click OK.

Option 2

Reinstall Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 5.01 or Outlook Express 5.5.
