BUG: Speaker Icon Is Missing After You Install WDM Audio Driver (245262)

SYMPTOMS

When you install a Windows Driver Model (WDM) audio driver on a Windows 98 Second Edition- and Windows Millennium Edition (Me)-based computer, the Volume icon may be missing from the taskbar.

CAUSE

This is a known problem with WDM audio drivers that are installed on Windows 98 Second Edition- and Windows Me-based computers.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • In Control Panel, double-click Sounds and Multimedia, and then click to select the Show volume control on the taskbar check box.
  • Restart the computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

When you install a WDM audio device on a Windows 98 Second Edition- or Windows Me-based computer, a New Hardware Found dialog box is displayed and the required driver files are installed. Although the audio device may function properly, the Volume icon is missing from the taskbar.
