OFF98: Type 3 Error Creating File DSN for FileMaker Pro Database (245034)

When you create a File DSN (Data Source Name), one of the following error messages may appear:
The application "ODBC Setup PPC" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 3 occurred.
You should save your work in other open applications and restart your computer.
-or-
The application "ODBC Setup PPC" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 11 occurred.
You should save your work in other open applications and restart your computer.
CAUSE
One of these errors may occur if both of the following are true:
- You are using the FileMaker Pro ODBC driver (ODBC 3.11 FileMaker Pro PPC).
-and-
- You are creating the File DSN in the ODBC Setup PPC control panel (ODBC Data Source Administrator dialog box).
NOTE: These errors also can occur if you select a File DSN in the ODBC Data Source Administrator dialog box and click Configure.
WORKAROUND
If you want to set up a DSN for a FileMaker Pro database, you can do one of the following:
Create a User DSN
If you want to create a User DSN for your database, do the following:
- On the Apple menu, point to Control Panels and then click ODBC Setup PPC.
- Click the User DSN tab in the ODBC Data Source Administrator dialog box.
- Click Add.
- Select the ODBC 3.11 FileMaker Pro PPC driver, and then click Finish.
- Type a name for your User DSN in the Datasource Name box.
- Click OK.
Create a File DSN Using Microsoft Excel
Using the Create New Data Source dialog box, you can create a DSN for your FileMaker Pro database. The DSN that is created this way will always be a File DSN.
- Start FileMaker Pro and open the database for which you want to create the data source.
- Start Microsoft Excel.
- On the Data menu, point to Get External Data and then click Create New Query.
- On the Databases tab, select <New Data Source> and then click OK.
- Type the name of your data source in the What name do you want to give your data source? box.
- In the Select a driver for the type of database you want to access list, select ODBC 3.11 FileMaker Pro PPC.
- Click Connect.
- If you want to specify a default table for your data source, select the table in the Select a default table for your data source (optional) list.
- Click OK.
NOTE: If you do not perform Step 1, you cannot create your data source. If your FileMaker Pro database is not open, the following error message appears when you click Connect in step 7:
Unknown error
An error has occurred while trying to gather a list of available tables.
