The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0a
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5
This article was previously published under Q244966 SYMPTOMS
When Remote Access Service (RAS) clients connect to a computer running Small Business Server (SBS) with the Fax service configured to receive incoming faxes, any of the following error messages may be displayed:
- Error 628 : The port was disconnected.
- Error 629 : The data link was terminated by the remote machine.
- Error 629 : The port was disconnected by the remote machine.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you configure a modem to receive both incoming fax calls and RAS calls. If you receive these error messages with a modem that is configured for adaptive answer, the adaptive answer strings that are added to the registry by the modem .inf file may be incorrect for the modem.
RESOLUTION
To verify that adaptive answer is causing the behavior, use either of the following methods:
- Temporarily stop the Fax service and then receive a RAS call.
- Configure the modem you are using for RAS calls to not receive faxes:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Fax Server.
- On the Receive tab, deselect the modem.
- Receive a RAS call.
MORE INFORMATION
You should dedicate one modem to the Fax service if the server is configured to receive incoming faxes. If you cannot use multiple modems, you must contact the modem manufacturer to obtain the .inf file that contains the correct adaptive answer strings for the modem.
