How to Configure Sbsetrn.exe with the Small Business Server Internet Connection Wizard (244944)

SUMMARY

When you use the Internet Connection Wizard in Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5, you have the following options:
  • Connect to the Internet using an existing account with an Internet service provider (ISP).
  • Select an ISP for a new Internet account to dial a Microsoft referral server to select a new ISP that has special offerings for SBS customers.
If the ISP supports Sbsetrn.exe, you can download an .ins file that configures the Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service to use Sbsetrn.exe and use settings specific to this server and domain from the registry.

If you want to use the Internet Connection Wizard to configure the Internet settings on SBS 4.5 and use Sbsetrn.exe with an existing ISP connection, you must manually add the registry values.

Sbsetrn.exe uses the following registry values for e-mail message retrieval:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Small Business\Internet\MS_IMS\Mail_DeliveryKey

    This value is the name the SBS-based computer registers with Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) at the ISP. This name must be generated by the ISP before being typed here (this should not be the server name).

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Small Business\Internet\MS_IMS\ Mail_Domain_Name

    This value is the e-mail domain for which Sbsetrn.exe dequeues e-mail messages.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Small Business\Internet\MS_IMS\ Mail_Route_Host_Name

    This value is the ISP's Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server name.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Small Business\Internet\MS_IMS\WINS_Address

    This value is the WINS server the ISP uses to handle dynamic IP addresses. This value does not require WINS server settings on the phonebook entries because of the possibility of duplicate NetBIOS name error messages.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Small Business\Internet\MS_IMS\WINS_Alt_Address

    This value is the secondary WINS server the ISP uses.
