SYMPTOMS

When you type a valid user name and password in the Run As Other User dialog box on a domain controller, you may receive the following error message:
Unable to logon:

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

CAUSE

This error message occurs because the Domain box in the Run As Other User dialog box is populated with the local computer name, rather than the name of the domain to which the computer belongs.

RESOLUTION

When you are prompted for credentials in the Run As Other User dialog box, clear the computer name in the Domain box, and then type the appropriate domain name.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
