S-Totalclients Field Has a Value of 2 When Only One Player Is Open (244180)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Services 4.1
  • Microsoft Windows Media Services 4.0

This article was previously published under Q244180

SYMPTOMS

The server-side log S-totalclients field has a value of "2" even when only one Windows Media Player is playing an ASX file.

CAUSE

Clients playing an ASX play list appear on the server as two connections, because the Windows Media Player pre-loads the next file in the play list before the current file is done playing. When the log file is written, it reports that one client has two files open, which is correct. This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

There is a field in the server-side log named "S-totalclients," which is "Clients connected to the server (but not necessarily receiving streams)." It is expected that this field should have a value of "1" because there is only one Media Player open.

Microsoft has found that most of the time this field has a value in multiples of two. It is consistent with what is seen from the Windows Media Administrators "Publishing Point Clients" page. Because the Media Player pre-opens the next title in the play list when playing an ASX file, the server sees two streams during the stream switching: the current one as it finishes streaming and the next stream as it opens.
