This article was previously published under Q244101 SYMPTOMS
When you try to start one of the Office programs, you may receive one of the following error messages:
The item "<Office program name>" could not be opened. (It cannot be found.)
-or-
The alias "<Office program name>" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.
When you click OK, the program does not start.
CAUSE
The error messages in the "Symptoms" section of this article may appear if the following are true:
- You are logged on as either a Limited user or a Panels user.
-and-

When you have multiple users enabled on Mac OS 9, each user has his or her own Desktop settings. The aliases that are created in this scenario point back to the Desktop folder owned by the Administrator/owner account. Limited and Panels users do not see this folder when they are logged on.
