OFF98: Error Message: "Error Creating Folder" When Installing Office 98 (244100)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition on your computer, the following error message appears:
Error creating folder.

1008:9,-5000 Access denied error

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You are running version 9.0 of the Macintosh System Software (Mac OS).

    -and-

  • Your computer has been set up to use multiple user accounts.

    -and-

  • Your account is a Limited or a Panels user account.

    -and-

  • You are using the Microsoft Office Installer to install Office 98.

RESOLUTION

Follow these steps to resolve the problem:
  1. Click Quit in the Microsoft Office Installer dialog box.
  2. Click Logout on the Special menu.
  3. Log on as the owner of the computer or as a normal user.NOTE: See the administrator of your computer if you are unable to log on as a normal user.

  4. Install Office 98.
  5. Start one of the Office programs. The first run installation process will run.
