OFF98: Errors Starting Office Program When Logged on as Limited User (244027)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition, the following error message appears:
The Finder needs your attention. Please select the Finder from the Application menu.
If you close the above error message, you may be prompted for your user name and then the CD-key. After you enter your CD-key, the following error message may appear:
Error creating file.
1008;5,-5000 Access denied error
If you activate Finder (press COMMAND+TAB), the following error message appears:
The application program "Microsoft Office First Run" could not be opened, because you do not have enough access privileges.
If you activate the Office program that you were trying to start, the following error message appears:
<Program Name> cannot launch the First Run Installer. There may not be enough free memory to launch the installer, the installer may have been moved, or your startup disk may be write protected.
where <Program Name> is the name of the Office program that you were trying to start.

CAUSE

This problem occur if the following conditions are true:
  • You are running version 9.0 of the Macintosh System Software (MacOS).
  • Your computer has been set up to use multiple user accounts.
  • Your account is a limited user account.
  • The first run installation process needs to run in order for the Office program to be started.

RESOLUTION

Follow these steps to resolve the problem:
  1. Click Logout on the Special menu.
  2. Log on as the owner of the computer or as a Normal user.NOTE: See the administrator of your computer if you are unable to log on as a Normal user.

  3. Start one of the Office programs. The first run installation process will run.

  4. On the Special menu, click Logout.
  5. Log on as the Limited user.
  6. Start the Office program again.
