Repair Does Not Perform a Version or Language Check When Replacing Files (244005)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
This article was previously published under Q244005 SYMPTOMS
When you repair a Windows 2000 installation, the repair process does not verify that you are using the Windows 2000 CD-ROM that matches the operating system that you are attempting to repair.
For example, if you are attempting to repair a Windows 2000 Server installation and you insert a Windows 2000 Professional CD-ROM, the files are copied from the Windows 2000 Professional CD-ROM. If you are repairing a German-version installation and you insert an English-version Windows 2000 CD-ROM, the repair process copies files from the CD-ROM. You are presented with a list of all of the Windows 2000 installations that are of the correct build number, regardless of the language installed.
CAUSE
The repair process does not perform a version or language check.
RESOLUTION
Make sure that you have the correct CD-ROM before you run the repair process. If you accidentally use the wrong CD-ROM and the wrong files are copied, run the repair process again with the correct version and language CD-ROM to make sure the appropriate files are replaced.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
