SUMMARY

If you upgraded to Office 2000 or one of the standalone office programs, the clip art from Publisher 98 seems to be missing. When Clip Gallery imports the legacy clip art, the categories that were used in earlier versions of Clip Gallery are not retained, but the images are not lost. You can find the images by performing a search and by using specific keywords.

If you want, you can restore the categories used in earlier versions of Clip Gallery. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Make sure you have sufficient hard disk space before you perform the following procedure. This procedure requires about 254 megabytes (MB) of hard disk space.
  1. Rename the Clip Art Gallery catalog files.

    Rename the Clip Art Gallery (*.cag) files installed by Publisher 98 so that Clip Gallery 5.0 doesn't find them.NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

    1. On the Start menu, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
    2. In the Named box, type pub98*.cag. In the Look in list, select Your Local Hard Drive(s).
    3. Click Find Now.
    4. In the Results window, right-click each of the following files and change the file extension from ".cag" to ".old".

      Pub98.cag
      Pub98cor.cag
      Pub98JWW.cag

    5. Close the Find all files window.
  2. Copy the clip art from the Publisher 98 compact disc.
    1. Insert the Publisher 98 compact disc into your CD-ROM drive.
    2. On the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
    3. In the left pane, click the icon for the CD-ROM drive. The folders on the compact disc will be displayed in the right pane.
    4. Click the ClipArt folder.
    5. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
    6. Click the folder you want to copy the clip art to and then click Paste on the Edit menu.

      NOTE: Do not select the Publisher 98 Clipart folder on your hard disk. If you do, Clip Gallery will see these files and recognize the Publisher 98 *.cag files that you renamed in the previous step, putting you back to where you started.
  3. Import the .cag files.
    1. On the Start menu, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
    2. In the Named box, type Cag.exe. In the Look in list, select Your Local Hard Drive(s).
    3. Click Find Now.
    4. In the Results window, double-click the Cag.exe file. Clip Gallery will run in standalone mode.
    5. On the Clip Gallery menu, click Import Clips.
    6. Locate the ClipArt folder you created in Step 2.
    7. In the Files of Type list, select Clip Gallery catalogs.
    8. Select the *.cag files, and then click Import.
    9. Quit and then restart Clip Gallery.
Clip Gallery will index the new clips. Indexing will take a little time, but allow Clip Gallery time to finish indexing the clips. If you cancel the indexing, the clips you copied to your hard disk won't be added to Clip Gallery.

This process will create user-specific catalogs. Therefore, if your computer is set up with different user profiles, have all users who log on perform Step 3 to import the .cag files so that they can access the clips.
