Windows 2000 Does Not Install ACPI Support on Generic IBM ThinkPad Model 770 Laptop Computers (243919)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q243919

SYMPTOMS

Windows 2000 does not detect or install support for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) on some IBM ThinkPad 770-series laptop computers (such as model 9548-30U). This does not include 770-series ThinkPad computers with the characters E, ED, X, XD, or Z after the "770."

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because IBM ThinkPad 770 non-E, ED, X, XD, and Z computers have hardware limitations and do not support ACPI.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows 2000 installs Advanced Power Management (APM) support on the IBM ThinkPad 770 (plain version).

IBM ThinkPad 770 computers with the characters E, ED, X, XD, or Z after the "770" have a different BIOS implementation that is ACPI compliant. These IBM ThinkPad computers (for example, the 770E, 770ED, 770X, 770XD, and 770Z computers) support ACPI in Windows 2000.

NOTE: APM support is not installed in Windows 2000 Server products.
