PRB: Application Error When You Try to View an ActiveX Control in the Customize Toolbox Window (243668)

SYMPTOMS

When trying to customize the toolbox from the Tools menu in Visual InterDev 6.0 the following dialog box appears:
Devenv.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "[address]" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the application

CAUSE

This error can be caused by certain ActiveX controls installed on your machine.

RESOLUTION

The most common ActiveX controls are those installed by Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0. Uninstalling Acrobat Reader 3.0 and installing version 4.0 can solve the problem. Certain other ActiveX controls can also cause the error, uninstall any suspicious controls and attempt to use the customize feature of the toolbox again.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. From the Visual InterDev 6.0 Tools menu, select Customize Toolbox.
  2. Click on the ActiveX Controls tab.
The error message appears.
