SUMMARY

Microsoft Management Console (MMC) is the core tool for administering and configuring Windows 2000. MMC is a presentation service for management applications. If you are having difficulty with MMC, a snap-in, or a Management Saved Console (.msc) file, use the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

MORE INFORMATION

Make sure that Microsoft Management Console will start without any snap-ins added. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type mmc.exe, and then press ENTER.
If MMC appears without a snap-in, the problem you are experiencing is not caused by difficulty with the MMC itself. If MMC does not start or you receive an error message, reinstall MMC by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.

If you are having difficulty with a specific snap-in, try to load it in MMC manually instead of loading it from an .msc file. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type mmc.exe, and then press ENTER.
  3. On the Console menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Click the snap-in that you are having problems with, and then click Add.
  6. Click Close.
  7. Click OK.
If the snap-in loads correctly, the .msc file that you were using to open the snap-in may have become corrupted. Save the console file that you created in the previous steps, and then use this new console file to open the snap-in. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Console menu, click Save As.
  2. Type a name for your new console file, and then press ENTER.
If the snap-in does not load, review the product documentation for the program that uses the snap-in that you are having problems with.
