SYMPTOMS

When accessing an Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 Web site that requires a client certificate, the server-side variables do not consistently identify the authenticated client and often the variables contain garbage characters.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
