SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to make a secure call in NetMeeting, you may receive the following error message:
NetMeeting was unable to place a secure call. The certificate you have chosen may not be usable with NetMeeting.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the default certificate is only available for the user who is logged on when NetMeeting is installed. The private keys associated with per-user certificates are locally encrypted in the registry using logon information. Only the user who is logged on when NetMeeting installed the certificate can use the private key.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, obtain NetMeeting Service Pack 2 from the following Microsoft Web site:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the appropriate method.

Method 1

Generate a new default certificate for the currently logged on user:
  1. Start NetMeeting.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Security tab, and then click OK.
  4. Repeat these steps for each user.

Method 2

Enable user profiles on the computer, and then reinstall NetMeeting for each user that logs on to the computer.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
