"Unknown switch argument" error message when you open a Danish Word 97 document in English (U.S.) Word 2000 (243013)

SYMPTOMS

If you use English (U.S.) Word 2000 to open and update a Danish Word 97 document that contains fields, you receive the following error message:
Unknown switch argument

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the field switches in the fields are in Danish and are not translated into English (U.S.).

NOTE: Danish Word 97 uses English (U.S.) field names and Danish field switches.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Download and Use a Macro

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file. After the file is downloaded, and the 990917_Word_Fix.doc is saved to your computer, open the file in Microsoft Word, and then follow the instructions in the file.

Method 2: Manually Change the Field Switches

Turn on field codes, and then manually replace the Danish field switches with their English (U.S.) equivalents.

NOTE: To turn on field codes in your Word document, press ALT+F9.
