Dcpromo.exe Does Not Provide a Warning About Configuring a DNS Server Without a Static IP Address (242189)

SUMMARY

When you run Dcpromo.exe on a server, you may receive the option of installing a DNS server or using an existing DNS server. This problem does not occur if you manually install the DNS service. If the Windows 2000-based server does not have a static IP address, Dcpromo.exe does not warn you that using a static IP address is recommended. However, if you choose to install the DNS server from Control Panel, you are warned that the DNS server should be configured with a static IP address.

Depending on your DHCP server's settings for controlling the assignment of IP addresses, using a static IP address for a DNS and WINS server is recommended but is not required in Windows 2000. If the IP address of the DNS server changes, this can cause connectivity problems for all clients that depend on the server and may increase network traffic.
