SYMPTOMS

After you uninstall Norton Utilities 2.x, you may receive the following error message when you try to open the Recycle Bin:
Windows needs Ue32.exe to open files of this type -- Recycle Bin

CAUSE

When you uninstall Norton Utilities, registry entries are left behind that reference Norton Unerase (Ue32.exe).

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, manually remove the following key from the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\clsid\.{645ff040-5081-101b-9f08-00aa002f954e}.\shell\Norton unerase\

This causes the Norton Unerase utility to relinquish control of the Recycle Bin.

MORE INFORMATION
