Error Message When Running Setup for Exchange Server Connector for POP3 Mailboxes (241695)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5
This article was previously published under Q241695 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to run Setup for the Microsoft Exchange Server Connector for POP3 mailboxes, you may be prompted to type a postmaster account name. When you type an account name, you may receive the following error message:
The SMTP address was not found in the Microsoft Exchange directory. Verify the e-mail and correct any mistakes before proceeding.
The same error message is displayed even if you typed a valid account name.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur when the POP3 connector Setup program attempts to make a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) query to the Exchange Server computer to verify the account specified for the postmaster account exists (by default, this is administrator@ domainname.com). The Setup program expects to connect to the Exchange Server directory service on TCP port 389. If a program such as Internet Locator Service (ILS) starts before the Exchange Server directory service, it may control TCP port 389.
Other possible causes include:
- The Exchange Server directory service may not be started. You can verify this by checking the Services tool in Control Panel.
- Another service has TCP port 389 open. Check the application event log for the following event:
Event ID: 1306
Source: MSexchangeDS
Description: Register LDAP protocol failed with error 10048. If port number 389 is used by another application, change to an unused port, then shutdown and restart Microsoft exchange Directory Services. Contact Microsoft Support service if the condition persists.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Services.
- Stop the LDAP server service and the Exchange Server directory service.
- Restart the Exchange Server services and rerun POP3 Setup.
- After Setup is finished, stop the Exchange Server directory service and change the TCP port from 389 to an alternate number.
NOTE: The Exchange Server POP3 connector requires the Exchange Server directory service to be available on port 389. After implementing this workaround, you must stop ILS and set the Exchange Server directory service back to port 389 when new users are added to the POP3 connector. You can then change the Exchange Server directory service back to the alternate port, stop/restart the Exchange Server directory service (and other Exchange Server services), and start ILS.
