SUMMARY

Much of the Exchange 2000 Server and the Exchange Server 2003 configuration information (specifically related to Internet protocols and routing) is stored in the metabase on the local computer. For disaster recovery to work successfully, you must back up the metabase as well.

File system backup is not the best choice for the metabase because the metabase maintains dependencies on other components that are missed by a straight file system backup. Also, the backup file may be under modification at the time of backup. The best method of backup is to use the Microsoft Internet Information Service (IIS) snap-in interface, which allows you to make an on-disk backup copy of the metabase.

How to Back Up the Metabase

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
  2. In the console tree, right-click your server, and then click Backup/Restore configuration.
  3. Click Create Backup.
  4. Type a name for this backup, and then click OK.
To get this metabase backup onto tape, copy the backup file created by the IIS snap-in to tape.

How to Restore the Metabase

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services.
  2. In the console tree, right-click your server, and then click Backup/Restore configuration.
  3. Click the backup that you want to restore, and then click Restore.
  4. Click Yes when you receive the following message:

    Restoring is a lengthy operation, which will wipe out all current settings and cause all services to be stopped and restarted. Are you sure you want to continue? [yes/no]
