SYMPTOMS

If you try to install Microsoft Office 2000 on Windows 2000, you may be unable to complete the installation.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you do not have at least 131 megabytes (MB) of hard disk space available on the C: drive.

STATUS

This is a Windows Installer issue and is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Setup stores temporary files on the same drive or partition because permissions can be different on other drives or partitions.

For example, one drive may use the NTFS file system and the other may use the FAT16 or FAT32 file system. In this example, all security and permissions settings would be lost for the files on your NTFS drive. You may not be able to gain access to the drive.

For this situation, the solution would be to disable rollback. Office 2000 disables rollback if there is not enough disk space, but not if different permissions are on different partitions.

You should also note that the disk space costing measurements in Office 2000 are not exact, so you can experience issues if the space you have available is near the minimum recommended.

When you start an installation on a computer that has the minimum recommended disk space, there may be enough space initially, but dynamic changes may alter that. For example, the virtual memory paging file changes in size when running multiple programs.
