WD2000: European-Language Grammar Checker Broken After You Upgrade to Office 2000 (241098)

NOTE: The information in this article applies to the French, German, Dutch, and Spanish version%3 of Word. However, it is not limited to those versions.

SYMPTOMS

In a non-English language version of Microsoft Office 2000, when you click Spelling and Grammar on the Tools menu to check the grammar in your Microsoft Word document, you may receive an error message similar to following:
Word cannot start the Grammar Checker
NOTE: This error message is in the language of the version of Office that you are running. For example, in German, the error message would be
Word kann das Grammatikprogramm nicht starten
and in French, the error message would be
Impossible de demarrer le verificateur de grammaire

CAUSE

This problem only occurs when you upgrade over an existing installation of an earlier version of Microsoft Word, and the path for the Novell proofing tools in the Windows registry is not updated for Microsoft Word 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To temporarily work around this problem, do the following:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  1. Quit all Windows programs.
  2. On the Start menu, click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit and click OK.
  4. In the Registry Editor, select the following registry subkey (folder)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\Grammatik\6.1\Microsoft\language

    where language refers to the language-specific version of Word you are using, for example, FR for French, or DE for German.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Novell\Grammatik\6.1\Microsoft\language, if it exists, as well.
  7. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
NOTE: When you start Microsoft Word after you delete the language subkey, Word rebuilds the subkey with the correct language settings.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.

The correct path for the Novell Proofing Tools in Microsoft Word 2000 is as follows

drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft\Shared\Proof\Language id

where language id is the folder for your specific language. For example, for French, the path in the registry is as follows:

drive:\Program files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\1036

This path setting to the Novell proofing tools should be correctly registered in the following location in the Windows registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\Grammatik\6.1\Microsoft\language

where language refers to the language-specific version of Word that you are using, for example, FR for French or DE for German.
