Original Version of Program Is Installed Instead of the Version of the Program on the Update Tab (240990)

SYMPTOMS

After you apply a software update for a deployed program or programs on the Update tab, and then double-click a file that is associated with one of the programs you did not install, the appropriate program is installed in its original version, not the version from the Update tab.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the appropriate associated program was not installed from the Update tab, so the original program version (that is not located on the Update tab) must be installed instead. Note that the Windows Installer handles this process without any intervention required by the user.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this behavior from occurring, disable the Auto-install by file extension activation feature:
  1. View the deployed program on the Update tab.
  2. WARNING: Because updates can be applied to a software distribution point or by using other methods, please consult the appropriate software manufacturer or view related documentation for information about how to correctly use the upgrade before proceeding.

    Under Deployment Options, click to clear the Auto-install by file extension activation check box, and then click OK.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

To reproduce this issue:
  1. A program is deployed in Active Directory.
  2. An upgrade to that program is advertised.
  3. Install the upgrade but do not install all of the available programs.
  4. Open a file associated with a program you did not install from the update.
Results: Note that when you open a file associated with a program that was not installed from the update, the program is installed from the original installation media and not from the update.
